BAPE KIDS® Unveils its much talked about KIMONO WEAR
Japan is a land of festivals. Whether it be Kyoto’s “Gion Matsuri,” Sendai’s “Tanabata,” the “Awa Dance Festival,” or Aomori’s “Nebuta,” though each festival gets a different flavor from its particular region, they all have histories stretching back over a hundred years, entrancing visitors with their celebrations of the four seasons. By bearing “mikoshi” (portable Shinto shrines), pulling “dashi” (traditional parade floats), and dancing traditional dances, participants express their thanks and offer their prayers to the gods. These festivals, which form an important part of Japanese culture, have garnered attention from across the globe for the originality with which they express their descent and their region’s traditions, even to the point of becoming tourist attractions that bring in large numbers of visitors from overseas. Say “I love authentic Japanese festivals” to a Japanese person, and there are certain clothes they will absolutely want you to wear. These are the “jinbei” and the “yukata,” which are the distinctive garments of Japanese festivals. Both are historic Japanese garments, which were originally worn indoors after bathing, but in more recent years have come to be worn at festivals.
This season, A BATHING APE® has adopted “Japanese culture” as one of its main themes. On previous occasions when we have released items with Japanese flavor, the unique, cutting-edge looks have resonated, which prompted us to adopt this theme. Among those, our Kimono Wear, from last year’s men’s collection, was a new design that took a traditional Japanese kimono motif, and gave it a more street outlook, attracting attention both within Japan and from throughout the world. Now, we are ready to go, with the release of our brand Kimono Wear from BAPE KIDS®.
The “jinbei”s that were previously launched, and which had a similar Japanese flavor, had a definite KIDS design, with popping colors and trendy patterns. This time around, our Kimono Wear take on a much deeper Japonesque essence in, for example, the arrangement of the collar. Starting with the 1st CAMO design, the words “A BATHING APE” are printed on the base of the collar in the style of a Japanese tattoo, rendering the design better matched to an adult face. The design is developed with green and yellow camo patterns. It is perfect not only for the coming Japanese festival season, but also for wearing around town as a “haori” (garment worn over the top of a kimono).
The shorts that we will be releasing together with the Kimono Wear is made with an elastic waistband, making them easy to wear even for kids. The shorts can be worn as a single item, or as part of a set that is sure to draw attention. Paired with a drawstring pouch, the outfit achieves a festival look with a strong street feel. Clothe your KIDS stylishly in real clothes that combine traditional Japanese street culture.
